Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barooah College, in short Dr. B.K.B. College, a premier rural college has its own existence and identity in the field of higher education in Assam. The college was named after the famous scholar folklorist and doyen of Assamese literature Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barooah(1908-1964) who hails from Puranigudam, the location of the college. Historically and culturally wealthy Puranigudam situated beside the NH 37 in Nagaon District of Assam was also the birth place of Manik Chandra Baruah, Bholanath Baruah, Devakanta Baruah, Nabakanta Baruah and Rudra Baruah who played seminal role in their respective filed of art and literature, business and politics in making a modern Assam.
Dr. B.K.B. College, one of the oldest colleges in Nagaon District, has been doing yeoman service since its establishment in 1967 catering to the needs of higher education of the rural and marginalised section of the society of greater Puranigudam. The college has been striving for excellence in its capacity and role already set in its vision and mission. After two cycles of NAAC assessment and accreditation successfully completed we are preparing for the third cycle of NAAC assessment in new vigour and zeal.
The college with about twelve hundred regular students and an excellent faculty at present offers two year Higher Secondary Course in Arts under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council and Undergraduate Courses in Arts and Commerce under Gauhati University. Besides the regular courses a sumptuous number of students have been pursuing different courses offered by the Centres of the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of Gauhati University and Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) functioning at our college.
After the celebration of Golden Jubilee year during 2016-2017 the college is now morally boosted up and introspection of 50 years already passed made the vision clear to our eyes. We are always committed to fructify our goals and to face the challenges in front of us. We know that we have to stride ahead in a new pace in the changing scenario of higher education in the country, because we have miles to go before we reach the pinnacle of success.
